Using NVU to Edit and Publish web pages

NVU is a great editor developed by the open source community to design and publish web pages. You can download Nvu here. http://www.nvu.com/index.php. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Once you have downloaded and installed the software, you will need to connect to your web server. Open NVU.

If the site manager is not already opened, go to the top menu, click on “VIEW” then “SHOW/HIDE” then site manager. The site manager will open to the left of the main window.

Click on “edit sites” then click on “new site”. Give your website a name. Enter your web server’s ftp and login information and click the check box to save password. Click OK to save your information and close the box. You are now ready to connect to your web server.

In the left window click on the plus sign to the left of your website name. NVU is now establishing a connection to your web server.

To Edit and Publish a Web Page Template to your web site:

In Nvu, click on the 2 nd button to the left blow the top most menu, that says “open”. Navigate to the web page template you want to use. Click on open and the page will open in the Nvu text editor. Type in the content you want. You can experiment using the editor to format the type as you prefer. Once you are satisfied with your page, simply press the “publish” button next to the open button. If your settings are correct, your page will be loaded to your website!

To send the template as an email:

Click on the “Source” tab at the bottom of the page in Nvu. You will see lines of HTML code. Select the entire text by clicking “select all” from the edit menu (may be a different command in mac). Then select copy.

Now go to your email editor and leave Nvu altogether, but don’t close it. Look for a source or code mode. Erase any code that you see on the page and paste the code from the text you just copied in View. Now click on “design” mode or something similar and you should see your complete page in your editor. You are now ready to send!
